I see where you're coming from, but strangely, I had the opposite reaction about the middle and end. For me, the nice parts about the play were the little anecdotes about these characters -- they seemed fresh and original, and the fact that they weren't chained to the plot kept them that way. Every time he jumped back to the story (which, as you say, is pretty obvious from the beginning, one way or the other), I found myself bored. I know I'm probably a terrible person for saying so, but I watched the audience during Davey's "confession." I saw a bunch of people looking right back at me. I guess I just expect nasty bits like that . . .
